Nominations for the 2011 AVN Awards

The nominations for the 2011 AVN Awards have been announced, with a record 155 categories represented, including brand new categories honoring retailers, distributors, pleasure products and additional categories in the web & technology sector.

The 2011 AVN Awards Show will take place on Saturday Jan. 8, 2011, at the Pearl Theater, inside the Palms Hotel & Casino. The show will be taped for broadcast in spring 2011 on the Showtime Network.

The event will be co-hosted by 2010 AVN Female Performer of the Year Tori Black and Digital Playground contract girl Riley Steele. A mainstream comic host will be named in the coming weeks.

“I’m excited about our mainstream host but we cannot reveal the name yet,” said Paul Fishbein, AVN founder. “We also have some great musical talent and a bunch of surprises for the show. The goal is to make it extremely entertaining, while still rewarding the industry and talent for the great work this year. I applaud all of the nominees.”

Vivid’s pick-up Malice in Lalaland (from Europe-based Miss Lucifer Productions), starring Kagney Linn Karter and Sasha Grey, garnered the most nominations for any individual title with 19 nods. Other top nominated titled include a pair of Batman parodies, BatfXXX: Dark Night from Bluebird Films and Batman XXX: A Porn Parody from Axel Braun and Vivid, with 16 each. Wicked’s Speed and New Sensations’ The Big Lebowski: A XXX Parody both grabbed 15 nominations, and Digital Sin’s The Sex Files 2: A Dark XXX Parody and Bluebird’s Bonny & Clide each took 14. The big-budget Body Heat from Digital Playground and B. Skow’s first huge feature, The Condemned, nabbed 11 nominations each, while An Open Invitation: A Real Swinger’s Party in San Francisco from Private also found itself with 11 nods.

Tori Black broke an AVN Awards record with 22 individual nominations in acting and sex scene categories, while Bobbi Starr nabbed an incredible 17 individual accolades, Kristina Rose grabbed 14, Andy San Dimas 13 and Asa Akira 10. Manuel Ferrara is associated with 30 nominations as a performer, actor, director and a producer through his own line, distributed via Evil Angel.

Demi Lovato, star of Disney’s “Sonny With A Chance”, continues to get help at an undisclosed treatment facility since being admitted for treatment for emotional and physical issues. Lovato has been in rehab since October, after the actress physically harmed a dancer during the South American segment of the Jonas Brothers’s world tour.

AIM Healthcare Conspiracy?

In the adult entertainment world, Sharon Mitchell is known as the driving force behind creating industry standards for HIV testing among performers.

But for the last year, she believes she has become a target by a nonprofit AIDS organization and the county health department who, she says, want to see her Sherman Oaks health center shut down.

“I really can’t stress enough that this has been a conspiracy, and I don’t know if that’s the right word,” Mitchell said in an interview with the Daily News.

“We’ve functioned as a doctor’s office with no problems. We’ve had very few (HIV) positives in the adult film industry.”

Mitchell co-founded the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation in 1998, a nonprofit that provides health care for performers and others in the primarily San Fernando Valley-based adult-entertainment industry. Because of her work, every adult film actor must have an HIV test every 30 days to perform.

Last week, the state Department of Public Health shut down AIM temporarily, saying it had been operating as a doctor’s office, but was “in fact, a medical clinic and therefore subject to more rigorous standards.”

A cease and desist letter issued by the state shows that AIM‘s application for license renewal was denied because it listed the name of the clinic rather than the name of the nonprofit, a fire safety inspection request was not provided, and it did not list a hospital where patients could transfer to if needed.

A state official said last week that inspectors were tipped off about the clinic in June.

The closure came a day after adult film actor Derrick Burts, 24, criticized AIM during a tearful press conference, saying clinic operators left him untreated for a month and a half after he tested positive for HIV.

The press conference was held by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit that has loudly advocated for mandatory condom use on adult film production sets.

In 2004, an HIV outbreak among a handful of actors prompted dozens of mostly San Fernando Valley-based production companies in the multibillion-dollar industry to shut down temporarily after actor Darren James tested positive for HIV. It also led to the quarantine of more than 50 people because of possible exposure.

Michael Weinstein, the executive director for AIDS Healthcare, has said regular monthly tests are not enough to keep porn actors safe. In addition, he has said that Mitchell has not reported HIV results in a timely manner.

Mitchell said she found Burts‘ accusations unfounded and possibly prodded by Weinstein.

“We have nothing to hide,” Mitchell said. “We are not in this for politics. We follow up with HIV reporting consistently and regularly.”

AIM Healthcare Clinic Shut Down After Burts HIV Scandal

AIM Healthcare Clinic Los Angeles County public health officials served a cease-and-desist order Thursday to the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIM), shutting down the facility to any new testing or procedures.

The order came two days after state health officials denied the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation‘s application to operate as a community clinic based on what regulators called “business-related issues.”

Diane Duke, executive director of the Free Speech Coalition (FSC), a Canoga Park-based porn trade association, said it was her understanding that despite the order, the clinic, known as AIM, will continue to maintain its database of test results used by porn producers to check whether performers have tested negative for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Duke said performers will be tested using “satellite blood-draw services.”

“Apparently the big difference is that the main AIM clinic cannot be utilized. Therefore, I do not believe that there will be any impairment of production activities,” Duke said.

On the clinic’s website late Thursday, staff called the closure a “temporary situation” and said they were “rapidly moving forward” on completing their license application. Derrick Burts – Patient Zeta in Porn HIV Scandal

The adult film performer who tested HIV-positive finally spoke out Tuesday, calling for mandatory condom use in porn productions, improved testing for sexually transmitted disease and follow-up care for fellow performers.

Derrick Burts, 24, said he tested HIV-positive in October at the AIM Healthcare Foundation in Sherman Oaks after working in both gay and straight porn films for a few months. He had previously been identified only as “Patient Zeta.”

Producers of straight porn regularly check performers’ test results using a database maintained by the clinic, known as AIM, to clear actors for work.

Derrick Burts, who performed in straight films as “Cameron Reid” and gay films as “Derek Chambers,” said he was tested at the clinic Oct. 8, then received a panicked call from clinic staff the following afternoon, summoning him to the office.

When he got there, he said, clinic staff told him that he had tested HIV-positive. They wanted to perform a follow-up test and begin notifying performers he had worked with since his last negative test result Sept. 3. Those performers, he was told, would be placed on a quarantine list while they, too, were tested.

Derrick Burts said he gave clinic staff the names of about a dozen performers he had worked with in California and Florida in both gay and straight productions. The list included his girlfriend, who also works in the industry as a performer. He watched as clinic staff began scanning a performer database, notifying those he had named and placing them on a quarantine list.

The clinic has since said that none of the performers on its quarantine list tested positive. Derrick Burts confirmed that his girlfriend tested negative.

He said that when he returned to the clinic Oct. 23 to review the second test results, clinic staff told him that they had traced his HIV infection to someone he had performed a scene with whom they described to him as a “known positive.”

Although straight porn performers must show negative HIV test results before filming, the gay porn industry does not have the same restrictions, although condom use is typically required.

Derrick Burts said he asked who the performer was and clinic staff told him they could not reveal the performer’s name or gender due to patient confidentiality.

Clinic officials could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday night. An attorney for the clinic was traveling outside the United States, according to an e-mail received from him earlier in the day.

Derrick Burts says he may have contracted the disease during a gay porn shoot in Florida. He said the performers used condoms during intercourse but not during oral sex.
