For some of us, it’s Friday the 13th. For others, it’s 50 Shades of Grey weekend. Even if you haven’t been looking for 50 Shades in the news, it’s been hard to miss over the last few weeks as everyone from BroBible to The Atlantic has covered the pop-lit BDSM sensation. However, porn producers jumped on the opportunity to make hardcore 50 Shades movies way before Hollywood had their act together. Here’s the HotMovies.com guide to BDSM movies that will show you a lot more than Hollywood will.
With its sequel just days from debuting on HotMovies.com, The Submission of Emma Marx, winner of the 2014 AVN Award for Best BDSM Release, is easily the best-known porn film reminiscent of 50 Shades. It’s been on the HotMovies.com Most Popular list for over 2 years, and has been the most popular fetish film for just as long. It’s not only popular with us either- Emma Marx was recognized in the Showtime special X-Rated: The Greatest Adult Movies of All Time as the most recently released film to make the cut. The first Emma Marx, which starred Penny Pax, Riley Reid, Richie Calhoun, and Van Wylde, went over so well that New Sensations and director Jacky St. James returned with The Submission of Emma Marx: Boundaries with the same original cast, plus Sara Luvv and Logan Pierce.
Watch our trailer for The Submission of Emma Marx: Boundaries for a taste of what’s to come:
Similar to the story line of Emma Marx, Zero Tolerance Entertainment’s Shades of Scarlet stars Karlie Montana as a shy bookish girl who can’t quite figure out who to navigate her own sexuality. She then begins corresponding with her favorite male erotica writer. Karlie starts out as a hopeless nerd who fantasizes about calling out of work sick in order to stay at home reading. However, her correspondence with author Roz Collins turns into a exploration of Karlie’s deepest desires, orchestrated for her by Collins, played by Anthony Rosano. Along the way, she is sent to meet AJ Applegate and Mr. Pete, Tommy Pistol and Skin Diamond, James Deen and Romi Rain, and finally, Derrick Pierce. This XXX scavenger hunt is worth watching all the way through, as there is a twist in this twisted adventure that is very satisfying.
In a very different vein, but similar in title to Scarlet, is Julie Simone’s Shades of Red. Unlike the above-discussed movies, Shades of Red is not an erotic drama, but a fetish film containing a myriad of different BDSM acts. Rebecca Reynolds dishes out the punishments to Julie for doing her wrong. Nothing is simulated here, and if you are familiar with Julie Simone’s work, you know that she and her costars are highly skilled fetish performers. Each scene is literally peppered with shades of red, be it in hair color, wardrobe, walls, mouth gags, heels, restraints, toe nail polish (Rebecca smothers Julie’s face with her pedicured feet in Scene 2), and in the cherries on the end of those cigarettes Julie is forced to smoke. The third and final scene in Shades of Red culminates in an intense wax play scene followed by a caning. If only we could see some real kink in the mainstream the way that it’s done here!
Interestingly, Filly Films has two lesbian great take offs on 50 Shades of Grey with The Many Shades of Juliette March and 50 Shades of Dylan Ryan. While they’re not part of a series in relation to one another, both movies were directed by Madison Young and feature Sadie Lune as dominant Ms. Grey. Both films are sexy all-girl kink adventures that star some people who know their way around dominance and submission. After all, with Madison Young directing, do you really think she’d play you for a sucker? Not at all. We be happy to see more lesbian kink any day.
Finally, we’d be remiss not to note Sweet Sinner’s acclaimed BDSM drama series, Shades of Kink. All three films, each directed by James Avalon, feature similar themes of innocence and its corruption, but in complex ways. Each film is the story of someone who needs to wake from the dullness of their life and expand their sexual horizons. While Shades of Kink 1 and 3 have female protagonists, Shades of Kink 2 is the story of a guy, played by Logan Pierce, who falls in love with a woman who turns out to be a dominatrix. Who’s the dominatrix? Penny Pax, aka Emma Marx. Even if you skip the dialogue and watch the sex scenes, the whole series delivers across the board.
